Ali R. Photography, # 12, Light-Trap

How does a viewer evaluate a photograph?  Would s/he looks at an image and walks by quickly without seeking any meaning?  Or, s/he tries to dig in with whatever prior knowledge he/she posses to understand the idea or concept behind it?  Some photographs are not so easy to read. The signifier, or the image in this case is hard to figure out.  The signified, or its idea is also difficult to fathom. Perhaps one could guess from the title, "light-Trap" that it has something to do with light trapped within the confinement of dark, cold walls.  But what does this image signify? What does it tell you? (www.alfaphotography.com)

Ali R. Photography, # 11, Untitled

Another image with the lighting and camera position playing major roles.  The reflective surface of the triangle in the middle could only be achieved by the position of the camera.  This is to look from the opposing direction of the light source and receive the reflecting rays. I decided to be on the edges of the reflection, rather than the center, to keep some texture and avoid competing with the two iron bars that look almost white. (www.alfaphotography.com)

Ali R. Photography, # 10, Acrophobia

When people say "photography is lighting," they are not kidding! Lighting, proper camera position and composition contribute to the unusual look of this photograph.  It is appropriately called "Acrophobia" or fear of sharp edges.  How does one feel about the small patch of the blue sky, entraped among the cold concrete pieces? Ali R. Photography, # 9, Luminance

Should a photograph be easy to read, or complex enough to raise questions ?  I like the latter one.  Our contemporary culture promotes easy pleasures and intellectual laziness.  Try to figure out how many layers exist in this picture.   What could it be? A hint, it's a real photograph without digital manipulations.  (www.alfaphotography.com)

Ali R. Photography, # 8, Refraction

This image is the combination of a painted shape on the ground, shadow of a metal structure from above and reflected light from the greenish glass of a window.   The texture comes from the concrete floor. (www.alfaphotography.com)

Ali R. Photography, # 7, Cutting Edge

Oops, I missed one day.  I got too busy and forgot that this image was to be posted on Sunday. This is the third of a set of three pictures that I talked about the other day.  Also shot at the Montreal Museum of Art, this photograph invests in the sharp angles of the walls to construct, through a tight composition, an image that certainly would not have existed without the right light, converging walls and different textures.
